Veronique Giwe Tongbi
Veronique Giwe Tongbi, Democratic Republic of Congo. Left DR Congo at 34 years old, lived in Centrafrique for 14 years. Has been in Boise since the spring of 2012.
At eighteen, I was a student at a modeling school in Congo. When I was twenty, I left my country to study fashion in Geneva. And it was there that I took a true modeling class. I loved Geneva. I was a good student, and I was always working, doing photo shoots, getting pictures taken. I wanted to stay there, but my cousins told me no. They told me stories about bad things that could happen to me. After three years, I went back to my country. I wish I could have stayed. I was a model until I was twenty-four years old. I loved dressing myself. My favorite outfit was a straight skirt, always in black, and a blouse, either black and white or brown, and a black belt. My shoes always matched what I wore. When I was dressed in my beautiful clothes, I felt beautiful and like everyone in the world thought I was beautiful. When I wore something, everyone wanted to wear it. They could see on the outside the way the clothes made me feel on the inside, that they made me feel beautiful.
