Maria Shefa, born in Kabul, Afghanistan. Moved to Boise in July 2000. Lived in Pakistan for three years before moving to Boise.
I was a student at the University of Kabul before the Taliban came. I remember how beautiful the campus was. I studied science. When I looked out the windows I saw trees—they were green, different flowers everywhere, pink, red, yellow, white, orange. The air smelled like roses. There was a tea shop. Every student went to the tea shop and talked about what we were studying. Sometimes boyfriends and girlfriends were together. The man who is my husband now was a student at the university. He studied science, too. The first time he told me I love you was at the tea shop. And I said I love you back. That was thirty-three years ago. It was a very happy time in my life. It’s a good memory of my life.
