His newest project is working with his western swing/country jazz band, sometimes referred to as the Hyper Modern Country Quartet. Initially formed with pedal steel guitarist Roger Conley (formerly of The Countrypolitans), the HMCQ plays a mixture of James's original songs along with a few choice covers, influenced by western swing, honky tonk, modal jazz, lounge, and norteño. The band released a limited edition (20 copies), lathe cut 7" of the song "Lotus Blossom" in the summer of 2021. James and the HMCQ are currently in pre-production stage of their first album, which not see the light of day until 2022 considering how backed up vinyl production is.. In the meantime, you should catch them live.
