I’m an Idaho boy, raised on a ranch near Glenns Ferry. Moved to town in my teens, graduated Caldwell High School, Undergraduate degree from College of Idaho. Masters degree Boise State. I started kayaking in the 1970’s. After school I spent 4 years sailing the South Pacific, ultimately ended up in New Zealand, where I started raft guiding. I worked on the South Island for 3 years and then one year on the North Island. I came back to the states in the 1980’s and started guiding for Grand Canyon Dories, first in Idaho and then down in the Grand Canyon. I was fortunate to be cast as a Powell boatman for the IMAX movie “Grand Canyon, The Hidden Secrets” This was filmed in 1983 when the canyon had extreme high water. After that I married and had two kids, and started teaching. I taught in Idaho for almost 30 years. I continued to guide on Idaho’s rivers during the summer, mostly the Main Salmon and the Middle Fork. I am retired from teaching and in 2016 I went back to New Zealand to be the river manager for a company starting a Dory business on the Whangerei river. I love living in Idaho “The Whitewater State”.
